Auto-Remove Silence from Videos with Recut
Save Time by Automating Your Edits. Recut Integrates with Your Favorite Editing App, it is Mac and Windows, and NO SUBSCRIPTION!
Some weeks ago, I mentioned Recut in my newsletter, an application I was testing to remove silence from my videos, hoping it would help me edit faster. I didn't mention it again because something unexpected and exciting happened: I sent feedback to the developer, and he asked if I was interested in a video call. I talked to Dave, shared feedback on the app, heard about its direction, and after several more weeks of consistently using it and finding its place in my workflow, I'm happy to finally tell you more about it.
I created a video where I go more in-depth about this application and give you a walkthrough, explaining settings and showing you how and when I use it. If you're interested, you can watch it here:
Why Recut?
Several apps can do similar things, many with more features, bells and whistles, AI integration, etc., but they are subscriptions. A big deciding factor for me to choose Recut is that it currently is just a one-time payment. Other standout features include:
Beautiful, clean interface free of visual clutter
Absolute control on the detection of silence threshold
Options for setting padding, preventing abrupt cuts
Multiple tracks, allowing the use of a main audio track recorded separately
Perfect integration with Final Cut Pro X, Da Vinci, Capcut, Premiere
Cross-platform compatibility (Windows and Mac)
Usable for both video and audio
All of this, without a subscription, is a rare find. It seems like one of those amazing apps that very few people know about.
Note: I love the auto silence removal feature when listening to podcasts in Overcast. Since Recut allows direct import and export of audio, it could also be useful for podcasters or people interested in listening to lectures at faster speeds.
You Are On Control
I'm pretty new to content creation, having only sporadically posted videos on YouTube or created courses for Skillshare in the past few years. For the longest time, I’ve much more focused on wedding filmmaking or narrative-driven work, which requires a different skill set than talking head videos. Still, I have learned a lot about editing visually and intuitively. One of my major concerns with tools that automate the editing process was losing control over the edits.
That's definitely not the case with Recut. It keeps the edits under the editor's control and doesn't take cutting decisions away. It provides flexibility—you can use it in a simple way, even exporting rendered video directly, OR, the way I prefer, integrating it with your favorite app. I believe part of Recut's vision is not to replace a full editing app but to complement it improving your workflow.
Room for Improvement
Of course, there's room for improvement. There are some issues with GPU usage, causing slight video stuttering. This may differ on your system and isn't a major issue since I finish my edits in FCPX. A few more options when manually dragging sections or segments in the timeline would be nice, as well as having auto-sync for different tracks.
What sets me at ease is that instead of cramming many features into this app, the development seems focused on improving its current state and making it the best at what it does: saving time for editors & removing silence.
Final Thoughts
Even in its current state, this app has huge potential and is absolutely worth it. If you create talking head videos, YouTube content, online courses, or similar, this is a fantastic tool to have in your arsenal. I see it as a secret weapon that saves me a lot of time, especially since I'm not the best at talking to the camera and have to remove a lot to get my footage to a clean, polished state that delivers a clear message.
Recut has a fully functional trial for 5 exports without watermarks. I invite you to give it a try.
