Shooting the Streets
AI Street Photography, Bear 2 Beta, Daniel Arnold, Social Media Music
Hey guys! Let me go over a couple of things that stood out from last week and that you may find useful or interesting:
On Street Photography
A few days ago I saw this post from an Instagram account that shares some good street photography work. I am personally not very concerned about AI taking over professional photography or creative and artistic work but still found this surprising.
Street photography is something that has interested me since I first grabbed a camera, and THIS PDF that I read more than a decade ago was a huge influence and inspiration at the time. Technology and cameras have changed a lot since, and I don’t agree with everything written there anymore, but it’s still a great resource for anyone interested or curious about this.
The same PDF above was later ‘translated’ into a short three-part video series. Again, I disagree with some of the things about gear and equipment, but the philosophy or sentiment does continue to make sense, even thirteen years later: PART 1, PART 2, PART 3.
On the same topic, I have to say that Daniel Arnold is one of my biggest influences in street photography, and THIS INTERVIEW is a huge inspiration. I rewatch from time to time.
If you guys want to know more about Street Photography let me know... it may be one of those things I really enjoy writing or talking about.
On Music
Some weeks ago I saw THIS post on Ólafur Arnarlds’ IG. He played a piano improvisation and one of his followers (Ella McRobb) sang on top of it. This past week I saw that they flew Ella into Iceland and made the improvisation into an entire song. To see collaborations like this happen makes me have a bit of hope on social media.
On Apps
Bear 2 Public Beta is here! Bear is my favorite app for note-taking: I have shared about it before. I honestly didn’t think I needed any new features but having link previews, pdf previews, in-pdf search, markdown tables and a lot more stuff has been really cool. The search within notes on iOS alone makes this update totally worth it for anyone that is into Building a Second Brain or using this app for his/her Personal Knowledge Management System.
Since I’m now posting more frequently on Instagram I was looking for a way to manage hashtags and found HishHash App. I am on their free tier but it has still been very helpful. Much better than using a note and copying + pasting from there as I was doing before.
On Cinema
A Wounded Fawn (2022). It’s hard to come across new inventive horror films that don’t fall into the same clichés we’ve seen over and over again, but his one was pretty good! I love the retro vibes. Synopsis: A serial killer brings an unsuspecting new victim on a weekend getaway to add another body to his ever-growing count. She’s buying into his faux charms, and he’s eagerly lusting for blood.
White Noise (2022). I have some trouble of perspective when watching films that relate to the whole covid pandemic or that make it part of the central theme. I am not sure, maybe because it still feels too close. Still, I have always liked the cinema of Noah Baumbach. The way he approaches family dynamics is always very interesting to me and while this one is not my favorite film of his, it was still a good watch. Synopsis: College professor Jack Gladney and his family’s comfortable suburban life is upended when a nearby chemical leak causes “The Airborne Toxic Event,” releasing a noxious black cloud over the region that forces the Gladney family to evacuate.
The Family Game (1983). After watching Haru I went ahead and looked for more films from the same director (Yoshimitsu Morita). His approach to the cinema language is really special and he did it once again here. Very different. Very unique. Very fresh and daring. Synopsis: Japanese parents (Juzo Itami, Saori Yuki) hire a tutor (Yusaku Matsuda) for their foolish son and get a critic of their lifestyle.
