This past week I’ve been in the process of preparing for the launch of a new class. I’ll share more about it when it’s up. A few days ago I also went through setting up this Substack, I wrote about some of my reasons and the process behind it. Still, in the midst of what has been some crazy busy days there’s also a few more things that I’d like mention.
ON WORDS
While looking for name ideas for this newsletter and a personal brand I discovered the “What’s the Word” subreddit. Such a cool find. I remember that as a teenager I had a big interest in unknown or unusual words. I’d watch films or read books with a paper in hand to take notes of words and phrases that sounded ‘cool.’ I think I even did flashcards. Eventually though, I realized I couldn’t use most of them so I left this hobby aside. Discovering this subreddit brought me back to that time.
I also found a similar and very helpful subreddit: “Logophilia.”
Somewhere around there I found the word “ultracrepidarian” and I think I’ll do an effort to integrate it to my vocabulary. It means “a person who expresses opinions on matters outside the scope of their knowledge or expertise.”
Along the same lines. I discovered The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows and I was SO SURPRISED. It’s a dictionary of made-up words to describe unusual things or feelings for which there’s no words. There’s so much beauty and poetry in there. Super interesting. I plan to read more when I have a chance. It’s also a bestselling book , by the way.
ON GROWTH & BUSINESS
I discovered the Tim Ferris Podcast and I wonder why I didn’t find it before. I’ve only listened to about three episodes but it’s super interesting so far. So many insights about personal-growth, business, habits, and more. Now I have a backlog of about six hundred episodes in my waiting list. I’m sure I’ll be mentioning content from this podcast again.
I did a lot of research and tried to watch what I could find about getting set up with Substack. THIS VIDEO was the best, without a doubt. It may be useful if you are interested in starting your own newsletter. THIS is also a good watch if you want to hear about the creator talking about the vision and direction of this platform.
If you are into mental health, psychology, or therapy, I was reading THIS ARTICLE that talks about Jonah Hill’s Therapist. My brain is still digesting it, but I’ll leave it here for you.
ON CINEMA
Some recommendations from this past week:
Raise the Red Lantern (1991) If you can, watch it. Simple as that.
My Joy (2010) If you can stand dark movies, watch this one. And I mean dark in tone. Real. Depressing. A great film.
Where Is My Friend’s House (1987) Simple. Innocent. Poetic. Beautiful cinema. I watched this film about a decade ago but I couldn’t remember a thing. I enjoyed it just like the first time. A true gem by Abbas Kiarostami.
I watched but not sure I can recommend The Menu (2022), Something in the Dirt (2022), and Bones and All (2022).
Bones and All had a beautiful OST though, I loved the main theme. I still respect Lucca Guadagnino and I like a lot of what he does using the cinema language. However, I thought the way the story was told was just a bit lacking. I expected more after his Suspiria (2018) which left a stronger impression. I don’t want to spoil anything, but let me show you a few seconds of this scene with some of my favorite cuts in the film. I was reminded of Ozu’s pillow shots.
